December 2024 Update: RyanAbramson62 on TikTok

Earlier this year, yes, Ryan Abramson was swept into the TikTok trend. And since I started, I have made over 50 videos on the popular short form video app.

TikTok Ban, Donald Trump and What's Next:

In recent years, TikTok has become one of the most popular social media platforms in the United States, amassing over 150 million active users in the country. Its meteoric rise can be attributed to its unique ability to combine entertainment, creativity, and connection in short-form video content. However, as the platform’s popularity grows, like my Ryan Abramson TikTok Blog, so too does the scrutiny it faces from lawmakers and government agencies. Recent developments suggest that TikTok may be facing a potential ban in the United States, igniting a heated debate about national security, free speech, and the future of social media.

The Background: Why TikTok is Under Fire

TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese tech company headquartered in Beijing. Since its launch in 2016, TikTok has grown into a global phenomenon. However, its Chinese ownership has raised significant concerns among U.S. lawmakers and regulators about the potential risks to national security. Critics allege that TikTok’s data collection practices could allow the Chinese government to access sensitive information about U.S. citizens, given China’s strict laws requiring companies to cooperate with government intelligence agencies.

The Trump administration was the first to take significant action against TikTok, issuing executive orders in 2020 to ban the platform unless its U.S. operations were sold to an American company. While those efforts stalled in court, the Biden administration has continued to scrutinize TikTok, most recently through the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). Lawmakers across the aisle, including prominent Republicans and Democrats, have raised concerns that TikTok poses a threat to national security, influencing public discourse and potentially being used as a tool for surveillance or propaganda.

The Legal and Legislative Push for a Ban

In March 2023, TikTok’s CEO, Shou Zi Chew, testified before Congress, defending the platform and its efforts to address security concerns. Despite TikTok’s claims that user data is stored on U.S.-based servers and protected by Oracle’s cloud infrastructure, many lawmakers remain unconvinced.

Several legislative efforts aim to ban or heavily regulate TikTok. The most notable is the RESTRICT Act, introduced in Congress to grant the federal government the authority to regulate or ban foreign-owned technologies deemed a threat to national security. While the RESTRICT Act doesn’t specifically mention TikTok, it is widely seen as a direct response to the platform’s rise and the broader concerns about Chinese-owned technologies.

TikTok’s Defense and Public Pushback

TikTok has launched a public relations campaign to counter these efforts, emphasizing its commitment to transparency and user safety. The company has proposed Project Texas, an initiative to wall off U.S. user data from foreign access by routing it through Oracle servers. TikTok also argues that banning the platform would stifle free speech and harm the millions of creators, small businesses, and users who rely on it for income, connection, and entertainment.

Many TikTok users, like this Ryan Abramson, and influencers have joined the fight, warning that a ban could set a dangerous precedent for government overreach into digital platforms. Critics of the ban also point out that other social media platforms—such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter—collect similar data but do not face the same level of scrutiny, raising questions about whether the concerns are based more on geopolitical tensions than genuine security risks.

Ryan Abramson: Broader Implications of a TikTok Ban

If TikTok were banned, the impact would be felt far and wide. Millions of creators who use the platform to earn a living or grow their personal brands would need to pivot to other social media channels. Small businesses that depend on TikTok’s unique algorithm to reach niche audiences would face challenges in finding similar success elsewhere.

For the tech industry, a TikTok ban could create a chilling effect on foreign-owned apps and platforms trying to enter the U.S. market. It could also escalate tensions between the U.S. and China, potentially leading to retaliatory measures against American companies operating abroad.

Finally, a ban raises questions about free speech and digital rights. TikTok has become a space for creative expression, political activism, and community-building. Removing it from the digital landscape could stifle these activities and set a precedent for regulating other platforms in the future.

So, What Comes Next?

As of now, the future of TikTok in the United States remains uncertain. The RESTRICT Act and other legislative efforts continue to gain traction, but they face significant legal and political hurdles. Meanwhile, TikTok’s user base is growing, and the platform remains deeply embedded in American culture.

For creators and businesses, the potential ban is a wake-up call to diversify their social media strategies. Platforms like Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and emerging apps may offer alternatives, but none have yet replicated TikTok’s unique blend of algorithmic precision and community engagement.

More Updates To Come

The debate over TikTok is about more than just one app; it’s a conversation about the intersection of technology, national security, and free expression in the digital age. While the outcome remains uncertain, one thing is clear: the TikTok saga will have lasting implications for the tech industry, international relations, and the millions of users who have made the platform a central part of their lives. Whether TikTok survives the scrutiny or becomes a cautionary tale, its story underscores the complex challenges of navigating the digital landscape in a rapidly changing world.
