Each financial aid software company has the ability to file for free. Most will determine if you can skip the payment based on the financial information you've submitted. Some schools also purchase waiver codes for families to use. It does not hurt to ask!

This is a situation that you must talk to the financial aid office about. Every situation is unique.

I own my own business, and the business owns my house and cars.

This can be a complicated situation for some families. Be warned, hiding assets in a business will likely get flagged in the financial aid process. Don't try to be sneaky!

I have a beach house, but it was left to me by my parents when they died? Will this hurt my financial aid?

Most schools will include all assets, regardless of how you acquired them. Someone with the same income without a beach house will likely have a lot more "need" than you.

Most financial aid officers have "seen it all." It is just not worth the risk to be dishonest. Yes, some people will get away with hiding their assets, but the vast majority will not.
